The Mangrove Tree is well-known for it's exotic, complex, and extensive prop root system. As the tree grows, it sends down a meandering segment of roots into the soft, muddy substrate in which it resides. Some of these roots become quite thick and are very strong. The root systems create a compelling and beautiful habitat for a myriad of aquatic life forms. The mangrove root system can be the basis for a fascinating brackish water aquarium. And yeah, they work fine in freshwater, too!
We're excited to offer these genuine sections of Red Mangrove root for aquascaping purposes! These sections were legally harvested from Hawaii, with the approval of the State of Hawaii and the USDA, which have designated the species "invasive" in the state, and are happy to see it removed! And of course, we were happy to help take it off of their hands! Each piece has been inspected and approved for shipment by the United States Department of Agriculture in Honolulu, so these are not just "randomly grabbed" pieces.
This is a remarkably dense wood, quite heavy for its size. The sections that we offer range in length from 12 to 24 inches (30.48- 60.96cm), and are anywhere from 1.25-3.5 inches (3.17- 8.89cm) in diameter. Most are straight, but some have a slight "curve" to them. Some have slight "stubs" extending outward from the main piece, but most are simply more-or-less "straight" log-like sections.
This wood is quite dense, and some pieces will sink immediately. Others may require soaking in water for a week or more in order to saturate. This wood, will leach significant amounts of tannins into the water for an extended period of time. That's okay, because our more authentic view of the brackish water mangrove habitat is baed on tinted water, muddy substrate, and epiphanic materials clinging to the roots!
There are lots of ways to use this wood to achieve realistic underwater effects. All you need to do is look on our pages, or do a Google search for "mangrove thickets" and you'll find tons of underwater images for inspiration!
These pieces are in limited supply and hand-selected, and while we can't guarantee that you'll receive a piece exactly like what you want, we'll do our best to accommodate requests whenever possible, and as supplies permit.
