If you've been following my ramblings here at Tannin, you know that we're big fans of natural-looking substrates in biotope-inspired aquariums. Most of the tropical substrates that we've seen in nature are comprised of soils, bits of plants, bark, wood fibers, and other organic materials, in addition to sands.
WHY I LOVE IT: When I first formulated our coconut-derived substrate, Fundo Tropical, I utilized mainly coconut-husk material which looks, feels, and functions much like the natural substrate materials found in tropical streams and rivers. However, over the years, as we worked with more botanicals, we knew that we could do better...
So I changed up the formula altogether! The result is the most faithful replication of some of the natural materials found on the substrate in many habitats that I've ever created! A finer, smaller, more varied size of materials that, when mixed with sand or used alone, creates a remarkably authentic, highly functional substrate additive.
"Fundo Tropical" is a clean, totally natural, sustainably-sourced, and highly functional substrate enhancement media, consisting of natural roots, bark, and coconut- based materials, that will give your biotope all the authenticity, aesthetic boost, and functionality that you'd want from a substrate material!
You can mix it with sands, clays, and other materials to create your own unique substrate formulations, or even use it alone as the entire substrate .
ORIGIN: Southeast Asia
PREPARATION: We recommend boiling the material for approximately 1 hour (plus or minus a few minutes), because it's a very lightweight material that doesn't sink unless it's properly saturated. We recommend a post-boil soak for a day or two afterwards to really make sure that it stays down!

NOTE: This is a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each botanical is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
