If you follow our blog, look at pics of natural habitats of our tropical fishes, and seek inspiration from other hobbyists, you'll see palm fronds in the water and at it's edges. We've long entertained the idea of utilizing palm fronds in aquatic displays, and seeing our friend Tai Streitman's amazing aquarium, with palm fronds as an integral part of the aquascape, we started testing some in our own systems, and we're really loving what they bring to the aquarium!
After a lot of searching and experimentation, we've fallen in love with the fronds of Phoenix roebelenii, a Date Palm from Southeast Asia. It's a medium-sized palm tree that reaches heights of only 6-10 feet tall (2-3m), and has beautiful fronds that are around 14" (35.56cm) long, including the stem, making them a near-perfect size and configuration for aquatic use! With its stiff leaf and stem, it's very long-lasting when submerged. Ours are carefully selected from a source that is free of pollution and agricultural contaminants, and carefully air dried for use. Although dry, they retain a greenish color indefinitely.
These fronds will last long time when submerged, and can be gently cleaned, air dried and re-used, although many do start to break down after several months submerged, and should be replaced periodically. Preparation is pretty straightforward, in our experience: Simply give them a good rinse in fresh water, and they're ready to use. You can soak them overnight in said fresh water; the choice is yours. Now, they are really buoyant initially, so you'll need to anchor them down some way, with a rock, plant weights, or other botanical/decorative materials, and they'll stay exactly where you want them. Each frond has its own unique character, and will gradually soften and "morph" over time, further adding to the beautiful "vibe" they bring. And, being botanical items, they will impart some tannin to the water, perhaps bringing just a bit of light golden "tint" that we find undeniably attractive!
We offer these fronds as single specimens, which average around 6"-8" i(15.24cm-20.32cm) in width, so you can take this size into account when deciding how many you will need for the specific effect you're trying to achieve.

All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
