An awesome little find, the Kurrajong Pod comes from the Kurrajong, or "Bottle Tree", Brachychiton populneus, and offers a great combination of durability, texture, and "tint producing capability!" These pods have a nice little opening and a hollow interior cavity that is just large enough for small fishes or shrimp to hang out in!
With a deep, earthy color and woody texture, it evokes that "flooded forest" vibe in an aquarium filled with leaves, other botanicals, and driftwood. Kurrajong Pods are highly variable in size, but typically measure anywhere from 2.5"-3" (6.35-7.62 cm), with an opening as wide as 1"(2.54 cm) on some specimens.
They will soften up a bit over time, and although the opening to the cavity might close up a bit after preparation, they are pliable enough to gently pry open with a tweezers or by hand as you see fit.
For a closer look at this unique pod, check out this article in "The Tint."
PREPARATION: It takes about 45 minutes of continuous boiling in order to sink; we typically will let them soak overnight in some fresh water afterwards to really saturate them before adding them to an aquarium.
ORIGIN: Australia/North America
