The Dregea Pod has a really unique scoop-like shape, and is reminiscent of the pods and fruits which fall into tropical streams, enriching the waters and providing foraging and protection areas for many species of fishes.
As pods go, these are quite variable in size; ranging from about 2.25"-3.25" in length, and about 1.25-1.5" wide at their widest point. Derived from the Dregea volubillis plant, they have an interesting, striated, nut-like outer shell and a smooth, woody interior. They kind of look like miniature gourds cut in half! When placed on the substrate here and there, they really help you evoke the appearance of a tropical stream!
Shrimp love grazing on them, for both the biofilms they recruit, and on the soft interior of the pods themselves as they break down over time. For more on this cool botanical, check out a recent edition of "Behind the Botanical" in our blog, "The Tint."
PREPARATION: We recommend boiling them for 40-45 minutes to thoroughly saturate and sink them. They're really lightweight, but surprisingly long-lasting.
ORIGIN: India and Indonesia
