A true "gift from the jungle", the Cariniana Pod comes to us from the Cariniana legalis tree from South America. Interestingly, these are some of Brazil's oldest trees, with some specimens over 3,000 years old! These cool seed pods fall off of the trees and are reminiscent of those which are found submerged in Amazonian waters. Perfect for aquascaping, their little openings make them a natural shelter for smaller fishes like Apistos, shrimp, and even frogs in the vivarium!
The hard surface of these pods may recruit a "biofilm", which is a fantastic supplemental food source for many small fishes and shrimp. They're durable and long-lasting underwater.
These pods vary in their exact dimensions, of course, but typically are about 2"-3" (5.08-7.62cm) in length, and are about 1"-1.5"(2.54-3.81cm) wide. Some are considerably smaller, so we try to include several sizes in each package!
For a deeper dive on this botanical, see this recent installment of "The Tint."
PREPARATION: We recommend that you boil them for 40-45 minutes before use (or longer, if they don't sink for you!), then let them cool for about 30 additional minutes. Rinse 'em off, and they're good to go!
