Bits of roots, twigs, and shoots from terrestrial plants are found throughout the aquatic environment. They form a network of "interstitial spaces" on the substrate, where all sorts of aquatic life can flourish.
I've been incorporating lots of little root and twig sections into my botanical method aquariums for a long time. Stuff like root pieces really create an interesting aesthetic, which provides utility as well. I distribute bits and pieces of assorted roots and twigs here and there in the substrates of our botanical-style aquariums. I received so many questions about my use of these root and twig pieces that we decided to offer packs of them for sale!
WHY I LOVE IT: "Bits and Pieces" gives you all kinds of functional utility. If you look at many photos of the wild habitats from where our fishes come from, you'll see that the substrate is littered with bits of roots and other materials, which forms a complex "microhabitat", which fosters the development of biofilms and fungal growths, and creates a place where fishes can forage and hide among.
"Bits and Pieces" consists of assorted sections of roots and small twigs of various varieties and sizes, perfect for all sorts of interesting botanical method aquarium uses!
PREPARATION: I like to boil "Bits and Pieces" for about 15 minutes, then let them sit in the water until they sink easily. Give 'em a quick rinse, and you're good to go!
