Red Mangrove Root Section (single piece)

The Mangrove Tree is well-known for it's exotic, complex, and extensive prop root system. As the tree grows, it sends down a meandering segment of roots into the soft, muddy substrate in which it resides. Some of these roots become quite thick and are very strong. The root systems create a compelling and beautiful habitat for a myriad of aquatic life forms. The mangrove root system can be the basis for a fascinating brackish water aquarium.

We're excited to offer these genuine sections of Red Mangrove root for aquascaping purposes! These sections were legally harvested from Hawaii, with the approval of the State of Hawaii and the USDA, which have designated the species "invasive" in the state, and are happy to see it removed! And of course, we were happy to help take it off of their hands! Each piece has been inspected and approved for shipment by the United States Department of Agriculture in Honolulu, so these are not just "randomly grabbed" pieces. To our knowledge, mangrove wood from this source has not been available previously.

This is a remarkably dense wood, quite heavy for its size. The sections that we offer range in length from 12 to 24 inches (30.48- 60.96cm), and are anywhere from 1.25-3.5 inches (3.17- 8.89cm) in diameter. Most are straight, but some have a slight "curve" to them. Some have slight "stubs" extending outward from the main piece, but most are simply more-or-less "straight" sections.  We offer them in two sizes: "Regular", with lengths of 12 to 18 inches (30.48- 45.72cm) and an average diameter of 1.25 inches (3.17cm)  and "Large", with lengths of 16 to 24 inches (40.64- 60.96cm), and an average diameter of 1.75 inches (4.45cm).

USDA regulations required the majority of the bark to be stripped away prior to them being shipped to us. Nonetheless, this wood has interesting color, texture, and character, and is incredible for aquascpaing with! This wood is quite dense, and most pieces will sink immediately. Others may require soaking in water for a week or more in order to saturate. This wood, like most other wood used in aquascaping, will leach significant amounts of tannins into the water for an extended period of time. That's okay, because our more authentic view of the brackish water mangrove habitat is baed on tinted water, muddy substrate, and epiphanic materials clinging to the roots! However, if you don't like your water so tinted, just employ some activated carbon or your favorite chemical filtration media to help remove it!

There are lots of ways to use this wood to achieve realistic underwater effects. All you need to do is look on our pages, or do a Google search for "mangrove thickets" and you'll find tons of underwater images for inspiration! It typically will take 3-4 pieces of more to create the impression of a submerged mangrove root. When combined with one or more of our Mangrove Branches, you can create a spectacular brackish water aquascape!

These pieces are hand selected, and while we can't guarantee that you'll receive a piece exactly like what you want, we'll do our best to accommodate requests whenever possible, and as supplies permit. They are NOT "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" pieces, and each one is slightly different.
