We love these pods, because they have some characteristics of a leaf, but have the "heft" that you'd expect from a seed pod. Actually the inner "valve" of the fruit of the Mahogany tree, Swietenia macrophylla, they have an interesting, "tongue-like" shape, are fairly durable, yet lightweight. With their interesting color and texture, they will will look great as a sort of "transitional" botanical as part of a leaf litter bed!
Swietenia Pods will help evoke that tropical stream-bottom look, reminiscent of the pods and fruits which fall into the water, providing enrichment and foraging/protection areas for many species of fishes.
These beautiful botanicals are good-sized, too- averaging about 3.25" (8.25cm) in length, and about 1.25"(3.18cm) wide at their widest point.
PREPARATION: We recommend boiling them for at least 30-45 minutes to get them waterlogged enough to sink. Being "lightweights", they float easily, and do take some time to go down.
