If you've been following our blogs and social media, you know that we're in love with the idea of creating transitional aquatic/terrestrial displays, such as our "Urban Igapo." These unique habitats are perfect for replicating at home. And what could be more appropriate for a transitional habitat than a plant which can tolerate both "wet" and "dry" season conditions?
Enter the "Japanese Sweet Flag", Acorus gramineus. This hardy plant is perfect for the "Urban Igapo" approach, as it can grow in terrestrial. transitional, and aquatic environments.
We've been carefully growing out these unique plants since around 2016, and we are finally offering these to you! You'll receive healthy, well-developed plants with nice root growth and good color. They'll range in size from 10"-15" and are ready to root in your fave substrate ! The plants are carefully packed damp, and will ship nicely.
This grassy-leaved cultivar of Sweet Fag has beautiful deep green leaves, and an overall grassy appearance. Acorus grows from a rhizome which creeps along the substrate, throwing out lots of new plants over time! Its growth pattern is quite similar to that of familiar aquairum plants like Anubias. It's perfectly suited for growth in shallow water margin areas.
Plant them with in any aquatic soil, or rich substrate, like our "Varzea" or "Igapo" mixes, well-established sand substrates, aquarium plant substrates, or even soil- gravel mixes. Make sure that the roots are covered, but that the majority of the rhizome is at the surface of the substrate.
You can hit Acorus with a variety of lighting, ranging from ambient room lighting to LED and and you'll see very nice growth. An awesome plant for ponds, too!

NEVER dispose of aquatic plants by releasing them into local waterways. Invasive aquatic plants destroy local ecosystems, driving out or killing the native inhabitants. They may also cause damage to local economies. They must be thrown away in a manner that assures they won’t be able to get into your local natural aquatic environment.
