We've long entertained the idea of utilizing palm fronds in aquatic displays, and after seeing our friend Tai Streitman's amazing aquarium, with palm fronds as an integral part of the aquascape, we started testing some in our own systems.
After a lot of searching and experimentation, we fell in love with the fronds of Phoenix roebelenii, the "Pgmy Date Palm" from Southeast Asia. It's a medium-sized palm with beautiful fronds that max out around 14" (35.56cm) long, making them a near-perfect size and configuration for aquatic use!
We offer these fronds as single specimens, which average around 6"-8" (15.24cm-20.32cm) in width, so you can take this size into account when deciding how many you will need for the specific effect you're trying to achieve. Some will arrive a bit "greener" than others, depending upon our supply. They will all fade and dry with exposure to air and a little time. You just need to be a little patient and they'll dry out in a few days. Even when thoroughly dry, they retain a greenish color indefinitely as they break down. They easily "spring back" from being folded for shipping, as they retain good flexibility.
PREPARATION: Simply give them a good rinse in fresh water, and they're ready to use. You can soak them overnight in said fresh water; the choice is yours.
