These attractive botanicals are pretty respectable in size; ranging from about 2.75"- 4" (6.98-10.16cm) in length, and about 1.25" to 2" (3.17-5.08cm) wide. They're a dense, surprisingly heavy little pod with an interesting, leaf-like appearance, highly variable in color. Actually a fruit segment of the Brazilian tree, Kielmeyera lathrophyton, they're another perfect "surrogate" for the many types of fruits which fall into tropical waterways.
Small fishes and shrimp will spend a lot of time foraging among them, and small fry will occasionally speak refuge in them, much as they do with leaves! They give off a lot of tannins and can really help tint the water! Although they soften after submersion, these are durable and long-lasting botanicals with many aesthetic applications! Check out our recent "Behind the Botanical" for a lot of detailed information on this unique botanical!
PREPARATION: We recommend boiling them for at least half an hour to get them waterlogged enough to sink. It could take longer, depending on the particular pod! As with our other pods, the prep time is totally worth it for the aesthetic reward that these bring to your biotope.
