The aptly-named "Monkey Pot" is technically a nut, produced from the abundant tree, Lecythis pisonis, native to South America (most notably, the Amazonian region). The large, woody, gourd-like fruits are a favorite of...well- monkeys, which reach in and yank out the nutritous fruit inside, discarding the hard outer nut.
The fallen, empty nuts dry out and are collected and used for a variety of purposes, including utensils, bowls, etc. by the indigenous peoples of the region. As aquatic hobbyists, we've come to use them as a perfect "habitat enrichment" item, proving both utility and aesthetics in one convenient package!
These are coveted by frog enthusiasts for water holes, etc., and look amazing in vivariums! They last a long, long time in aquariums, too, and really add a touch of "jungle realism" to the display in which they are placed!
They're highly variable in both size and appearance, and typically range in size from 2"-4" (5.08-10.16 cm) in circumference. Sizes do seem to vary from time to time and season to season. If you are looking for a "jumbo-sized" specimen, let us know and we'll try to pick you a larger one, when possible.
PREPARATION: Boiling for at least 30-40 minutes will help leach out some of the initial tannins bound up in their tissues, as well help saturate and sink them. If you are going to use them underwater, we highly recommend an addition a soak of a few days before placing them in your display.
