These cones are another great "media" for providing beneficial tannins and humic acids, have been utilized by aquarium hobbyists in Europe for some time. When it comes to "tint-imparting" capabilities, the Birch cone, from the tree Betula occidentalis, is on par with the Alder Cone! Our Birch Cones are collected just for us in areas that are free from pollutants, insecticides, and pesticides.
We'd recommend a starting quantity of about 5-6 for every 10 gallons of aquarium capacity, at least to start. In addition to imparting a nice brownish tint, they can definitely lower the pH of soft water. Proceed slowly to gauge for yourself the effect that these little cones can impart into your aquarium water!
Our Birch Cones are offered in an approximately 4-ounce package, which will have anywhere between 130-180 cones (depending upon the physical size of the cones), for maximum value!
PREPARATION: We like to steep them in boiling water for about 20 minutes or so prior to use. This helps saturate them so they sink, and releases any surface dirt.
