Origin: Sandakan, Sabah, Borneo
The Indian Almond Tree (Terminalia catappa) provides many gifts for aquarists, including its wonderful bark. Like the leaves, Catappa bark offers a rich source of tannins, humic acids, and other substances which are thought to provide antibacterial and antifungal properties and other health benefits for aquarium inhabitants.
Tannin Borneo Catappa Bark is harvested from the trees in a sustainable manner from a small village in Sabah, Borneo, just for us! They are carefully cleaned, dried, and have tons of character! Some are almost like little "tubes", whereas others are semi-flat and wide. They're all pretty good-sized, and average about 7inches/ 18 cm long, and about 1/2"/1.27cm in width, forming a perfect supplemental substrate for for ornamental shrimp and small fishes to graze on. These are considerably lighter in weight and "texture" than our Indian Catappa Bark Pieces. Plecos and other catfishes actually will incorporate the bark as part of their diet, so you'll want to replace it over time.
These bark strips will impart a nice little humic "tint" to the water that we love so much around here, so if you want to minimize the coloration in your aquarium, it's not a bad idea to boil them for a few minutes, or simply soak them for a few days prior to use. This will also help them become more waterlogged (the darned things love to float!).
They will slowly decompose, and may be replaced as desired, or left in your aquarium to completely break down.
You can use as many as you'd like, taking into account their ability to color the water and affect pH. Tannin Borneo Catappa Bark Strips come 10 pieces to a package, for extra value!
NOTE: Because these are a natural product, cut by hand, each one will differ in appearance. The photo shown is to provide an idea of what to expect the product to look like.
