An Igapó is the word used in Brazil to describe seasonally inundated forests. This forests are flooded by extremely abundant rainfall, and may be submerged up to several meters deep for as much as six months at a time. The water in these forests is blackwater, stained by the rich soil and abundant leaves, tree branches, seed pods, and other materials which accumulate on the forest floor during the dry season, and impart their tannins and humic substances into the water when submerged. Within submerged litter banks a diverse population of fish species occurs.
The Igapó is a fascinating, yet seldom replicated aquatic feature, and is home to some of the better-known species of aquarium fishes, such as the Cardinal Tetra, other characins, various species of Apistogramma, and even some Knifefishes. This pack of botanicals was inspired by these rich waters and the abundance of botanical items found in them. Each item in our "Belo Igapó" pack was carefully chosen to help evoke a feeling of a flooded forest floor, with a variety of sizes, textures, and colors to add interest and foster ecological "richness" as they break down underwater.
This pack includes 3 Medium Catappa Leaves, 10 Coco Curls, 8 "Teardrop Pods", 6 "Rio Fruta", 5 "Savu Pods", 4 "Ceu Fruta", 10 "Mariposa Pods, 6 Banana Stem Pieces, 1 portion of "Mini Mariposa", 2 Loquat Leaves, 4 Magnolia Leaves, and 1 Pygmy Date Palm Frond!
A percentage of the profit from each "Bela Igapó" pack goes to support Project Piaba. This organization's mission is to increase the environmental, animal welfare, and social sustainability of the Amazonian aquarium fish trade, to develop and incorporate metrics through which this progress can be assessed, and to provide mechanisms to promote this industry. Through careful study, training of local fisherfolk, and the development of industry "best practices", Project Piaba aims to help foster an environmentally and socially beneficial home aquarium trade.
This pack is a bit different from some of our other packs, in that, from time to time, we're going to substitute items that "look better" to us, or have a more seasonal feel to them. Regardless, you're assured 58 pieces, and you're assured a great value and creative combination of botanicals sure to bring a smile to your face!
It's enough to really "do up" a 10-20 gallon (40-this pack 80l) tank, or give a great start to a larger aquarium. You can supplement with additional "a la carte" botanicals as needed to create a very rich, beautifully "tinted" aquascape!
Here's a great chance for you to do something cool for you aquarium, the natural Amazonian environment, and the fishers who earn their livelihood from the collection of tropical fishes!
