The leaves of the Teak Tree, (Tectona grandis), provide numerous benefits for tropical fish. When steeped in water, the leaves release rich organic compounds, such as tannins, humic acids, and flavonoids. Although they impart a very slight tint other water, it is much less significant than Catappa, or even Guava leaves!
Teak leaves have been used for decades by many Southeast Asian tropical fish breeders and hobbyists, as they are thought to have beneficial prophylactic properties that protect fish from skin infections. There are claims that it does stuff like help harden the scales of fishes, heal bite injuries, and prevent fin rot. It's also preferred that it enhances the colors of fish (not too outrageous, because it does have beneficial tannins and humic substances), and our personal favorite, "burning off fat" from the fish. We're just not going to touch that one!
Other fishes, such as South American cichlids, Tetras, and catfishes, Bettas, Guaramis, killifish, and Barbs will benefit from their use much as they would from any of the other leaves which we offer. Some ornamental shrimps utilize the decomposing leaves as a supplemental food source, and they're perfect in this crushed "format."
Many of you told us that you like to use leaves either as a "filter media", or as a supplement to your rich, botanical-enhanced substrates, so we've taken some of the work associated with preparing the leaves for these purposes. The convenient 1oz/28g portion size is perfect for adding to filter socks.
Before using the leaves in your aquarium, we recommend steeping them in hot water for about 15 minutes, then soaking them in fresh water overnight to let them lose any surface impurities that may be trapped i the tissues. Alternatively, many of you simply steep in hot water and use them right away...It's your call!
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
NOTE: Due to natural variations of leaves, each one will appear different. The photo is a representation of what to expect.
