As "miniature" fishes go, it's hard to not fall in love with the Pygmy Corydoras! This active, interesting little gem is popular for a lot of reasons! Found in the flooded forests and sand-bottom streams of The Amazon region. Ours come from Leticia, and are superb little fishes that are fantastic for all sorts of aquariums!
We offer these little guys in groups of 6 specimens, and really- like with C. habrosus- think that you should consider an even larger group- like a dozen. They are at their best in groups like this, and will be on the move constantly! They're pretty tough little fishes! While they won't always tightly school (Mike likes to call it more of a "swarm!"), with a large enough group, you're bound to see a bunch of them foraging together, or interacting with each other throughout aquarium. They tend to swim near the bottom of the tank, but will actively explore the mid-water column as well.
Although perfectly suited for our blackwater, botanical-style aquariums, they are also found in "white water" habitats in their range...so they're adaptable, too! in fact, they're really not that fussy about water conditions, as long as you maintain a clean, biologically stable aquarium. As is the caveat with many Corys, whatever type of environment you choose to house them in, be sure that you employ a fine substrate, like a sand, without too many sharp edges upon which the fish can damage their mouthparts. They are just fine with all sorts of lighting...they're hardly shy fish!
Like others in their genus, once settled, they'll eat just about anything you throw at them, provided it's small enough in size for them to handle! A varied diet of foods like Daphnia, Brine Shrimp, small pellets, etc. is great...And in the botanical-style blackwater aquarium, we observe them feeding among and possibly on the biofilms which arise as leaves and such break down. Size-wise, they top out at around .75", and the specimens you will receive will vary in size from about 0.5" to .75" consistently. A 20 gallon or larger tank works great for them!
Our specimens have been acclimated and well cared for by noted aquarist Mike Tuccinardi at his facility in Colorado, and are active, healthy, and actively foraging. Starting with healthy, active, well-handled specimens is really half the battle with these guys, and you'll be happy to see the quality of these fishes from day one!
Mike’s Notes: "Pygmy Corys really are an interesting, and I think somewhat misunderstood, fish. Most of the existing literature tends to state that they are endemic to the Rio Madeira in Brazil and inhabit whitewater streams exclusively, but neither of these are entirely accurate. This species’ range apparently extends significantly farther than this, along at least a few other Amazon tributaries close to the Colombia/Peru border, and I’ve seen this species in export facilities in three different countries – Brazil (Manaus), Peru, and Colombia.
Regardless, like so many other wild fish they are extremely hardy so long as they are treated with a bit of care through the supply chain and – importantly – get the chance to recover for at least a short time post-import. The specimens we offer are collected in a wide variety of habitat types in and around the Colombian Amazon, from quiet blackwater streams to fast-moving, rocky whitewater rivers."
