If you're a follower of our work, you know that we're huge fans of experimenting with rich substrates for blackwater, botanical-style aquariums. When we announced our 2018 Variety Pack Design Contest, it was only natural that one of our most experimental "Tinters", Garrett Everett, would enter! And of course, being a big fan of enriched substrates, we kind of knew that his entry would push the boundaries of that area!
What he ended up creating is a carefully-selected mix of materials that will create an amazing effect! We couldn't help ourselves but fall in love with this mix!
Let's let Garret describe his creation:
"This botanical pack is based on my experimentation with using botanical-enhanced substrate to achieve a natural look. It won't give your aquarium an exotic, feature-studded look or impart a dramatic tint, but the variety of small mixed media will instantly give the aquascape a "mature" and "broken-in" feel, and help provide an excellent foundation for developing biofilm, fungi, and the microfaunal cultures that feed on them. An excellent accompaniment to any Tannin order! (A great way to get you over that free shipping threshold too!)"
"Lixo de Folhas" ("Leaf Litter") comes in an approximately 6 oz package, which gives you enough material to easily enhance a nice section of a 20-40 gallon aquarium, depending upon the "richness" and density of coverage you're looking for. The mix is a careful blend of "Fundo Tropical", "Substrato Fino", Cutch Tree Bark, Crushed Teak Leaves, and "Mixed Leaf Media." When mixed into a shallow layer of other substrate materials, this mix can really help you evoke the appearance of a tropical stream substrate! It's a fantastic, rich-looking natural substrate enhancer for the blackwater aquarium!
Preparation is required, which consists of boiling the material for approximately 1 hour (plus or minus a few minutes), because it's a very lightweight material that doesn't sink unless it's properly saturated.
All in all, a fantastic, diverse blend of materials for creating realistic, "functional" botanical substrates!
NOTE: This is a natural product, and displays variation in color, size, and texture. Each pack is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect. Also, because of the seasonal availability of Cutch Tree Bark, we may substitute with other botanical materials, or adjust the "ratio" of materials in this pack.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
