From the Rio Demini, a tributary of the Rio Negro, just outside of Barcelos, Brazil, comes one of the most beloved of all freshwater angelfish, the Leopoldi Angelfish, P. leopldi. Distinguished from other members of the Pterophyllum genus by the absence of a pre-dorsal notch and the presence of a black blotch at the dorsal insertion on the 4th vertical bar, not to mention fins which are typically shorter than the length of its body, P. leopoldi is distinctive and attractive!
They tend to aggregate quietly among overhanging branches and roots in their natural habitat. They're found in dark, tannin-stained blackwater, with negligible mineral hardness, as well as more clearwater niches, and at temperatures ranging from 78-84 degrees F. Although they are found in a variety of habitats, and are quite adaptable, they seem well suited for our blackwater, botanical-style systems. They don't need excessively large amounts of flow, as they come from habitats with modest water movement.
We highly recommend quality pre-filtration of your aquarium water via reverse osmosis/deionization. Stability and water quality are far more important than chasing a specific target pH number for these fish. We recommend a temperature between 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously, utilizing some leaves or other botanicals in the water may be of benefit, supplying both beneficial tannins and humic substances, which are thought by many researchers to provide some possible immunity and disease resistance to the fish.
Our specimens are eating and in very good health before they get to you. These are fishes which have been well-handled all along the short chain of supply from collector to you, and Mike Tuccinardi's facility is well-prepared to handle these fishes upon arrival into the United States, where they are acclimated and carefully quarantined before being offered for sale.
These are young, healthy specimens, averaging approximately 2.5"-3" in length. We recommend feeding them with a variety of high quality frozen and live foods. They are often observed picking at biocover and perhaps even consuming algal films found on wood and botanicals.
A wonderful, highly rewarding fish for the experienced hobbyist. They're quite peaceful, except at breeding time, when they can be quite feisty! A relatively calm fish, capable of significant bursts of speed when annoyed or frightened. Being smaller, they are suitable for a variety of aquarium sizes and configurations.
