When you're talking about little, colorful fish, the "Green Neon Tetra" is probably the stereotype of the fish in your head! These are tiny, remarkably colorful fish which will really "set the mood" in a blackwater, botanical-style aquarium. In a small to modest sized tank with appropriate conditions, even the most hardened "big fish" hobbyists will at least take notice!
In the wild, they are found in large aggregations in a variety of ecological niches, such as forest streams, inundated forest floors ("igapo"), and "igarapes" (flooded small paths in the forest). They are commonly associated with areas filled with decomposing leaf litter, branches, detritus, botanical materials, and trunks of terrestrial trees. At home in dim blackwater environments, the Green Neon Tetra will glow stunningly when kept in an aquarium with conditions similar to its wild haunts!
In the aquarium, it benefits from the humic substances and tannins imparted by botanicals and leaves. In fact, we'd say that it's practically "mandatory" to keep this little fish in a tank replete with leaf litter and botanicals! They need to be kept in a early well-established, environmentally stable aquarium. Our specimens average about .75" in length, which is actually on the larger end of the size scale for these guys!
These are some of the nicest, healthiest, most well-adjusted wild-caught specimens we've ever seen! We sell 'em in groups of 12, because this is a shoaling fish that will simply not fare as well as individuals or smaller groups. Oh, and they're pretty small. But you knew that already, right? If you have the budget, a much larger group makes a truly impressive display!
