We love these pods, because they have the characteristics of a leaf, but have the "heft" that you'd expect from a seed pod. They have a wonderful, "teardrop-like" shape (hence the name), and really will look great as a sort of "transitional" botanical in your leaf litter zone!
They help evoke that Amazonian stream-bottom look, reminiscent of the pods and fruits which fall into the water, providing enrichment and foraging/protection areas for many species of fishes. These beautiful pods are good-sized, too- averaging about 2.25"-3.25" in length, and about 1.25-1.5" wide at their widest point. They have an interesting, striated, thin nut-like outer shell and a smooth, woody interior.
Small fishes and shrimp take to them easily, but they are really best suited for "habitat enrichment", bringing their unique aesthetic to the aquarium. As mentioned previously, they look really cool when mixed into your leaf litter bed, providing a nice contrast with the leaves and some of the other pods we offer! As an added "perk", shrimp seem to like to pick at the slightly softer interior of this pod as it slowly breaks down!
Preparation for these little pods includes boiling them for at least 30-45 minutes to get them waterlogged enough to sink. Being "lightweights", they float easily, and do take some time to go down. If you're really patient, you could go for the "room temperature freshwater soak" for at least a week- but it could take longer. They're surprisingly long-lasting for being so thin, which is a real plus, because they look so cool!
"TeardropPods" will leach tannins into the water over time, so keep this in mind when using them in your aquarium. Boiling will remove a lot of the initial tannins, but do expect a little "tint" over time.
We include 5 pieces in a package for added value and to help you better employ the aesthetic benefit of these remarkable pods in your biotope system!
NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect.
