Dried "Sappanwood" Pods (Package of 3)

These pods have a look that falls in between the much-loved "Helix Pods" and the "Tapete Pod", with a slightly thinner structure and different coloration than either. They're quite unique, and will make a great addition to a mixed bed of smaller botanicals! They are free of pesticides or other contaminants, and are carefully collected gently cleaned, and sun dried.

"Sappanwood" Pods are the dried fruits of the Biancaea sappan tree, which is native to tropical regions in Asia. It's known commonly as the "Indian Redwood" or "Sappanwood" tree. These distinctive botanicals are known to contain antimicrobials, flavonoids, and of course, tannins. In fact, the dried bark and fruit are used for dying fabric, so it's no surprise that these guys can impart a significant tint to the water!

"Sappanwood" Pods have an attractive curved form and a smooth, leathery appearance and texture. They make great little sheltered areas for shrimp, dwarf cichlids, catfish, and even some killies. Another perfect natural "prop" to simulate the river biotope, providing foraging areas for fish, and wonderful aesthetic benefits for you!

These are perfect to help cover open substrate and supplement leaf litter to simulate tropical stream bottoms. They will definitely recruit some biofilms over time, and we've seen our catfishes graze all over them! They are pretty good-sized, averaging about 6"-7" in (15.24-17.78cm) length, with a width of about 2" (5.08cm), so they can really create unique aesthetic accents in your blackwater, botanical-style aquarium.

These pods will leach some tannins into the water over the long term. Initially, they can really color the water! You'll need to boil them for at least 15 minutes (sometimes a bit more) to release some of the initial tannins and organics that may be trapped in their tissues. That being said, these guys surprisingly almost always sink immediately after submersion! You will likely want to do an overnight soak as well, just to make sure they do release any remaining surface dirt, those initial tannins, and organics released during the boiling process. And, they can "un-twist" themselves after preparation..Not to worry- they're actually pliable enough after boiling to "reshape" them by hand!

"Sappanwood" Pods are really cool aquatic botanicals, with a great combination of aesthetics, form, and function for a variety of aquatic displays!
