In the brackish water estuary habitat, the Red Mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, ubiquitous, providing shelter, food, and spawning areas for a diverse array of aquatic organisms. Red Mangroves are one of the most prevalent and vital plants in this habitat. As the leaves of the mangrove fall into the surrounding waters, they support a complex food web that provides a wide variety of aquatic life with sustenance. In the "mangals", where mangroves grow, mangrove litter is transformed into detritus, which partly supports the mangrove food web. Plankton, epiphytic algae and microphytobenthos also form an important basis for the mangrove food web.
Keeping with our tradition of "tinted" aquariums, these leave will impart tannins into the water, giving it a slight amber-brown tint. If allowed to decompose completely in the aquarium, the leaves will be rated upon by fungi and bacteria, just like their freshwater counterparts, to enrich the aquatic environment and form the basis of a unique captive food web. To our knowledge, dried Red Mangroves leaves have never been offered to the aquarium hobby for this purpose before, and we're really excited to bring them to you! They're slightly green to brown in color, and have a very distinct shape that will really stand out on earth-toned, muddy substrates in the aquarium!
Of course, if you don't want the tint caused by the decomposing leaves, you can certainly employ activated carbon or other chemical filtration media to remove it from the water.
These are collected and prepared exclusively for us from a trusted source, right here in the good ol' USA! Honolulu, HI to be specific, where, believe it or not, they are considered an invasive nuisance and we have the blessings of the government to remove them! Each collection of leaves has been inspected and approved for shipment by the United States Department of Agriculture in Honolulu, so these are not just "randomly grabbed" leaves. These are from brackish waters, and are varied in size, ranging from 1.5" (3.81cm) -3"(7.62cm) or so. You'll receive approximately 1 ounce of leaves in each package, which typically is about 36-40 pieces of varying sizes; a nice amount to start your brackish-water leaf litter bed with!
Preparation is like any of our other leaves. We recommend an overnight "steep" in warm fresh water, to soften them up a bit and aid in submergence.
ORIGIN: Oahu, Hawaii, U.S.A.
NOTE: The photo is for illustrative purposes. As these are a natural product, expect variation in the appearance of the pods that you will receive. The number of leaves you will receive is not a "set" number; rather, these are sold by weight, and depending upon the size of the leaves we have available at the time of your order, may vary slightly.
