Dried "Monkey Pot" (Single Specimen)

Another fascinating "gift from the jungle", the so-called "Monkey Pot"  is actually a nut produced from the abundant tree, Lecythis elliptica, native to South America, most notably the Amazonian region. The tree's large, woody, gourd-like fruits are a a favorite of...well- monkeys, which reach in and yank out the nutritous fruit inside, discarding the hard nut.

The fallen, empty nuts dry out and are collected and used for a variety of purposes, including utensils, bowls, etc. They are free from pesticides or other harmful substances. As aquatic hobbyists, we've come to use them as a perfect "habitat enrichment" item, proving both utility and aesthetics in one convenient package! While we can think of all sorts of uses, ranging from hiding places to planters, we're sure you can think of dozens more!

These are coveted by frog enthusiasts for water holes, etc., and look amazing in vivariums! If properly prepared (that means boiling and soaking for a few days), they can be used in aquariums as well! They last a long, long time in both environments, and really add a touch of "jungle realism" to the display in which they are placed!

Like any of our botanicals, they will leach out tannins over time when used submerged, and boiling for at least 30 minutes will help leach out some of the initial tannins, as well as sink them. If you are going to use them underwater, we highly recommend an addition a soak of a a few days before placing them in your display, just to let that "burst" of tannins and organics leach out a bit before using them in your aquarium. Even if you're using them in a vivarium, taking the time to do some prep work is strongly advised!

Ours come as single specimens, and are highly variable in both size and appearance. They typically range in size from 2" to even 4" in circumference, with about 2" being typical of late. Sizes do seem to vary from time to time and season to season, so we can't promise that we'll always have specimens that fall into these averages! If you are looking for a "jumbo-sized" specimen, let us know and we'll try to pick you a larger one at no additional charge.

All in all, these guys live up to their reputation as one of the more coveted botanical items used in the aquatics trade!

All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
