Origin: Texas, U.S.A.
The beautiful leaves of The Texas Live Oak, Quercus fusiformis are a real gem for the botanical-style aquarium enthusiast/aquascaper! Not only are they small (typically the largest specimens are less than 3.5"/8.89cm; most are around 2.5"/6.35cm in length), they have a very attractive, decidedly "tropical-looking" aesthetic- and they pack a nice dose of water-tinting tannins!
Our supply is collected and hand-graded exclusively for us by noted aquascaper, Cory Hopkins, who's drool-inducing aquascapes featuring these leaves have been shared on Tannins site and on worldwide aquascaping sites. It might be an industry first, but we think this is definitely our first "celebrity-endorsed" botanical!
These leaves are collected in an area free of pollutants or pesticides, and the leaves really high quality- almost entirely intact specimens. With their distinct shape and color, they lend themselves to a wide variety of aquascaping applications. They are the perfect "accent" leaf for a mixed leaf litter bed, or as the exclusive leaf in your aquascape. Because of their typically diminutive size, they are perfect for a "nano" aquarium! Check out the pics of some of Cory's aquariums which use these fantastic leaves for inspiration!
Like our other leaves, we recommend preparation before use. Specifically, we are big fans of a 10 minute "steep" in boiling water, followed by a room temperature soak overnight in fresh water. They are a bit brittle", so at the very least, a nice steep in warm water can help soften them a bit. Alternatively, you could simply soak them overnight in fresh water...or you could "steep and drop" them into your tank. It's really a matter of personal preference.
You might also find a fe acorns mixed in, which are also big tannin-producers, and are safe if prepared with the leaves.
We offer these super cool leaves in a useful 2 ounce/56.69g package. That's a lot of leaves in one of our 6"x 9" (15.24x 22.86cm) bags!
If you're a lover of botanicals, you'll definitely appreciate these awesome leaves, and the care which went into selecting them.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
