These beautiful pods come to us from Southeast Asia. They are carefully collected as fallen specimens from areas free of pesticides or other contaminants, gently cleaned, and sun dried.
Jungle Pods have an almost "woody" appearance and texture, and are quite strong. They make perfect little hiding spots for dwarf cichlids, catfish, and even some killies. A perfect natural "prop" to simulate the river biotope, where branches, seeds, and pods like these fall in and accumulate, adding to the richness of the biotope.
We love to use them to create little caves and natural areas for smaller fishes to retreat into, but they can also be used in a more creative manner, such as little "planters" for smaller aquatic plants, or a substrate on which to attach mosses...lots of aesthetic and functional possibilities with these pods! We've even heard of someone using these pods to hide the returns from a power filter! They're about 4" or so in diameter on average, with openings around 1.75"-2.5", making them as versatile as they are attractive!
These pods are pretty hard on the outside, but they will leach some tannins into the water over the long term. You need to boil them for at least an hour (sometimes a bit more) to waterlog them, because they do (maddeningly, we might add!) float when first immersed. If you're adverse to boilng your pods, you can always get creative and help sink them with plant weights, rocks, or gravel as well. You do need to rinse them before use in any case.
All in all, these pods are one of our favorite aquatic botanicals, as they are beautiful, unique, and can be used for so many creative aquascaping projects!
NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
