Our "Jungle Pods' have proven to be a staple for all our botanical fans, finding use as shelters, spawning caves, and as other decorative and practical applications in aquariums and vivariums! Now, we're not typically rigid adherents to the theory that "bigger is better", but when it comes to a useful botanical like this, it's certainly applicable to say "bigger is different!"
Yeah, these terrific pods are very similar to the "standard" sized "Jungle Pod", yet are significantly larger! They average around 4.5" (11.43cm), and have openings as large as 3" (7.62cm) or more! They're an overall "heftier" version of the Jungle Pod, and every bit as cool and useful for aquarium and vivariums! They can act as nice little (well, not so little!) retreats for frogs and other animals in vivariums, and perform a variety of similar functions in the aquarium.
They're quite durable, and will hold up very well under water, as well as in the humid vivarium environment. Like all of our botanicals, we recommend careful preparation prior to aquatic use. In the case of "Gigantes", you'll need to boil them for over an hour to get them saturated enough to sink reliably. And of course, we recommend a soak of a few days in a bucket of freshwater after boiling, to let them fully saturate and release some of the lignin and other organics found in the outer layers of the pods. We have noticed that the interior has more of a layer of this "spongy", paper-like connective material on the interior surfaces (see closeup pic), which you may want to carefully scrape out a bit with a wire brush or small knife (we used a grapefruit spoon!) before placing it in your aquarium.
Another caveat: "Gigantes" will typically tend to "recruit" more biofilms than some other botanicals in their "early submersion" stages, but this typically passes after a few weeks, and can be "assisted" along by occasional brushing with a toothbrush. Once your pod has passed through this phase, they tend to last a very long time in the aquarium (we've had one in a test tank for over 1.5 yrs and it's still going strong!). The takeaway here: As with all botanicals- patience, calm, and the passage of time will help you persevere and end up with an amazing "aquatic accent piece" that will be a super point of interest in your aquarium or vivarium!
NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photos serve as a reasonable representation of what to expect.
SPECIAL NOTE: The price shown is for a SINGLE specimen. The photo shows two specimens in order to illustrate both the interior and exterior of this botanical.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
