Dried "Concha Pods" (Package of 5)

Looking for something a bit different to enhance your biotope aquarium? We've found another gem! The "Concha Pod" has a really unique scoop-like shape, and is reminiscent of the pods and fruits which fall into Amazonian streams, enriching the waters and providing foraging and protection areas for many species of fishes. These beautiful, almost pear-shaped pods are split in half, and vary widely from individual to individual.

As pods go, these are quite variable in size; ranging from about 2.25"-3.25" in length, and about 1.25-1.5" wide at their widest point. They have an interesting, striated, nut-like outer shell and a smooth, woody interior. They kind of look like miniature gourds cut in half! When placed on the substrate here and there, they  really help you evoke the appearance of an Amazonian stream!

Now, shrimp love grazing on them, for both the biofilms they recruit, and on the soft interior of the pods themselves as they break down over time. Small fishes take to them easily, but they are really best suited for a grazing surface for shrimp, and for "habitat enrichment", bringing their unique aesthetic to the aquarium.  see the attached pic taken by our friend, "Mr. F.", who loves using them for his shrimp almost as much as the shrimp love foraging on them! "Conchas" look really cool when mixed into your leaf litter bed, providing a nice contrast with the more transient leaves and some of the other pods we offer!

Preparation for these little pods includes boiling them for at least 30-45 minutes to get them waterlogged enough to sink. Being "super lightweights", they float very easily, and do take some time to go down.  Some also tend to curl up more, almost "closing" in some instances, after boiling- and they still look cool! If you're really patient, you could go for the "room temperature freshwater soak" for at least a week- but it could take longer. They're surprisingly long-lasting for being so thin and small, which is a real plus, because they look so cool!

"Concha Pods" will leach small amounts of tannins into the water over time, so keep this in mind when using them in your aquarium. Boiling will remove a lot of the initial tannins, but do expect a little "tint" over time.

We include 5 pieces in a package for added value and to help you better employ the aesthetic benefit of these remarkable pods in your biotope system!
