Dried "Ceu Fruta" Pods (Package of 3)

This is a really cool botanical which, as one of our friends said, looks like "...the love child of a 'Ra Cama Pod' and a 'Jungle Pod'..!" Yeah, that kind of sums it up, although it looks to us like a bit of "Palma Abrigo" Pod got into the mix, too! These are very interesting, woody pods which hail from a wide range of tropical locales (ours are from sustainably-managed, plantation-grown trees in India), and are just the sort of thing you'd find floating or submerged in a tropical jungle stream. They almost look like little canoes (and they float like them, too)!

They are surprisingly lightweight, with a great color and texture. They can leach a terrific amount of tannins, akin to a similar-sized piece of Mopani wood or other driftwood. And, like many of our cool botanicals, this one requires a good amount of boiling to get it to stay submerged. We recommend about an hour, although sometimes the occasional stubborn one will take longer. A 24 hour "post boil soak" in freshwater is also a great idea, to really let it leach out the initial organics and bound-up tannins. They are full of flavonoids, saponins, and other humic substances, which have known positive health effects on fishes.

Averaging approximately 5.5"-6" (13.97cm-15.24cm) in length, and about 1"-1.5" (2.54cm-3.81cm) in width, these rather thin pods will look super cool in a wide range of aquatic applications, from aquariums to vivariums. They hold up very well under long term submersion and humidity, breaking down extremely slowly (we've had some down for over a year with the "wear and tear" finally starting to show significantly).

As they have a wide and "woody" textured surface, they will typically recruit some biofilms during their early "life cycle" as a submerged botanical, which will pass in time as they always do. You can use a toothbrush or even your fingers to remove the growth if it becomes offensive. We've found that various species of Plecos seem to love rasping on them, and even little guys like Otocinculus seem to love grazing on them...as do almost any ornamental shrimp we've kept with them!

If you're looking for a cool "botanical accent piece" for your blackwater aquarium, you'll definitely want to pick up a pack of "Ceu Fruta" Pods!
