Dried "Carambola Lixo" Leaf Litter Supplement ( .75 oz Package)

Yet another cool supplement or "leaf substitute" to use in your aquarium!

If you're looking for another alternative or addition to leaf litter in your biotope aquarium, this is a great substrate enhancer, as it will give you a similar leaf litter "effect", with a bit less of the tannin-leaching. These very lightweight botanicals get their nickname for their "Starfruit-like" appearance (they are in no way related to Starfruit, of course).

It is a perfect component of any stream bottom biotope, and resembles the materials which fall into South American streams, enriching the waters and providing foraging areas for many species of fishes. These interesting botanicals are small, earth-toned, and paper-thin!

Quite different from the other botanicals we offer, Carambola Lixo are on the smaller size; ranging from about 1"-1.25".  We offer them in a roughly .75 oz package, which gives you enough material to easily help enhance a nice section of a 10-20 gallon aquarium. When scattered on the substrate here and there, either on their own, mixed with other botanicals, or amongst Catappa leaves, they really help you replicate the appearance of an Amazonian stream!

Small fishes and shrimp seem to like to forage among them, like any form of leaf litter, but their real mission, in our humble opinion, is that of "habitat enrichment" for the cool aesthetics they bring to the aquarium.

Preparation for these little botanicals is quite easy. They require a little boiling or even steeping in boiling water, because they float like a soap bubble when first introduced to the water! They typically will sink after about 20 minutes or so of preparation.  You could do a prolonged room temperature freshwater soak over the course of several days to a week, and get the job done.

They last a surprisingly long time for a paper-thin little pod, holding their cool shape, while remaining surprisingly "rigid"- and will leach small amounts of tannins into the water over time, so do keep this in mind when using them in your aquarium. Boiling will remove a lot of the initial tannins, but do expect just a little "tint" over time.

We love these botanicals, and we think that you will, too, so give them a try!

NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect.

All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
