Dried Bur Oak Cups (Package of 5)

There is nothing cooler to us than finding an awesome botanical that works so well in a variety of situations. When our friend, noted aquascaper Cory Hopkins, turned us on to these beauties, we knew they were something special!

Hailing from the Bur Oak, Quercus macrocarpa, these robust little pods are actually the acorn, which wraps all the way around the nut. They have large overlapping scales and a little "fringe" at the end of the cup, which looks really cool! They have the distinction of being the largest acorns found on any North American Oak tree (hence the species name, "macrocarpa')! Sort of a miniature "Monkey Pot", if you ask us!

Whatever you refer to them as, they're a really great botanical to use in your blackwater aquarium. They range in size from about 1"- 2.25"/2.54-5.71cm in diameter, so they are neat little hiding places for shrimp and small cichlids, like Apistos! Ours are collected from clean, unpolluted areas, without any pesticides or other contaminants. They come in a pack of 5 for optimum utility.

Preparation is pretty easy; we recommend a 20-30 minute boil, and a good rinse in fresh water. They typically will sink straight away following such a "boiling time", although you may have to experiment a bit to see what works best with your particular specimens.

After submersion, they give off a respectable amount of tint to the water, and are simply attractive in every way! Like  so many pods with durable shells, they will recruit some beneficial biofilms shortly after they're submerged. They've lasted anywhere from 2-4 months submerged before they start to really break down.

All in all, these are terrific little botanicals that are sure to become a favorite!

NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect. Sizes may vary depending upon seasonal availability and other factors, so the range given is estimated.

All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
