As one of our friends loves to tell us, "Tannin seems all sorts of twigs and nuts, huh?' To which we have to answer in the affirmative. Well, here at last, we have a product in our portfolio that represents the "twigs" part of the equation!
The banana plant is a staple of tropical agriculture. So many parts of this plant are used for so many purposes- including its stems! These stems definitely add to the authenticity of your jungle stream biotope aquarium, and look super cool! They are free of pesticides or other contaminants, gently cleaned, and sun dried.
Banana stems have a cool, almost bonelike appearance and texture, and are quite strong. They make great little foraging areas for a variety of aquatic creatures. Dwarf shrimp, in particular, love grazing on the biofilms they recruit over time, and on the softening stems themselves as they begin to break down after being submerged. The accompanying pic from our shrimp-fancier friend "Mr. F." shows just how much shrimp adore these botanicals! These are another perfect, natural "prop" to simulate the river biotope, where branches, seeds, and pods fall into the water and accumulate, adding to the richness of the environment.
We love to use them to cover open substrate and supplement leaf litter to simulate Amazonian stream bottoms. They're highly variable, ranging in size from about 2"-2.5" in length on average, with an XL piece topping off at around 3" or so.
These stems are pretty hard on the outside, and largely inert, in our experience, imparting little in the way of a noticeable "tint" to the water. Nonetheless, they still may leach some small quantities of tannins into the water over the long term. They are super light, and by now, you know what that means.
Like all of the cool stuff, you'll need to boil these for at least an hour (sometimes a bit more) to waterlog them, because they are really quite light and readily float when first immersed! Or, you can simple soak them for a week or so to help waterlog them, or some combination of the two. As with some of our very lightweight botanicals, on rare occasions, you may even need to get really clever and weigh them down to get them to sink, even after boiling!
These branch pieces will gradually decompose and soften over a very long period time, adding to the richness of your aquarium environment. An interesting phenomenon happens after they're submerged for a while: They often "swell up" to several times their "dry" diameter, which creates a great effect!
All in all, these stem pieces are awesome aquatic botanicals, and they are ideal for a variety of applications.
NOTE: These are a natural product, and display variation in color, size, and texture. Each pod is unique! The photo serves as a reasonable representation of what to expect.
All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only. Please use common sense and take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to using them, to reduce the possibility of problems. Always go slow when introducing any botanicals into your systems, so you can judge the effect they have on your fishes and plants. They are not intended for human consumption. DO NOT INGEST!
