Okay, we know what you're thinking...Using a mud substrate in a brackish water aquarium? Yeah. Absolutely. Not just any "mud", mind you. CaribSea Mineral Mud is a unique blend of sediments that is formulated to replicate many aspects of tropical fringing coastal mangrove environments.
This is one of our all-item favorite products for a variety of specialized uses.
We've used this stuff before over the years in our specialized reef aquariums, and much later on, in mangrove systems. The particles in Mineral Mud are in a size range that is favored by soft, burrowing infaunal, macro animal assemblages-the unique benthic life forms you'd expect to find in mangrove habitats. This useful substrate provides a variety of trace elements plus calcium, strontium, iron, sulfur and free carbon. In addition, Mineral Mud contains a compliment of live marine bacteria to enhance the utility of the product!
When used alone, or mixed in with other materials, it will be the basis for a truly functional brackish-water substrate system that looks really great, too. And you don't really need to use a ton of the stuff.
Now, because this substrate contains marine organics, and was created to mimic coastal marine mangrove environments, it is designed to reach anaerobic conditions within an inch (2.54cm) of the substrate/water interface! What this means is that, once established, you should avoid disturbing the bed.
