Long a favorite in the aquarium hobby and trade, the beloved Bumblebee Goby is a wonderful choice for a variety of aquarium types. We are especially fond of them because they can adapt to either slightly brackish conditions, or blackwater, botanical-style aquariums...And of course, they can do fine in pure freshwater, too!
An active, curious, and surprisingly gregarious little fish, the Bumblebee is a wonderful little fish. They are most comfortable and display their most amusing behaviors when kept in groups, so we offer them in a group of 6 specimens. If you have the space and finances to purchase a larger group, you certainly won't be disappointed.
They tend to feed easily on foods like live brine shrimp, Dapnia, and copepods, but will eventually adapt to frozen versions of these same foods. The key is getting them settled in and comfortable, and it starts with quality specimens! Ours are carefully net-collected in Thailand, and have have been acclimated and well cared for by noted aquarist Mike Tuccinardi at his facility in Colorado, and are active, healthy, and actively foraging.
Once you keep a group of these endearing little gobies, you'll understand why they have been such popular fish for so long!
Mike’s Notes: "This species of Bumblebee Goby is hard to identify with any certainty given that it matches the description of B. doriae (which is thought to be restricted to Indonesia) but is collected in Peninsular Thailand, within the range of B. sabanus. There’s a lot of confusion in the hobby about whether Bumblebee Gobies are really brackish or freshwater fish, and in my experience the answer is “both”.
They are found in both coastal drainages and estuaries in brackish water as well as soft, acidic, blackwater peat swamps – and they seem to adapt to either environment fairly well. We keep our specimens in ‘lightly tinted’ freshwater with the addition of 1.5 – 2.0 ppt of salt; however they seem to do equally well with either higher or lower salt concentrations. For a small fish, they are packed with personality and best displayed in a group given their social nature."
