It would be hard to imagine where the freshwater aquarium hobby would be without the ubiquitous Angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare. These fantastic specimens are found in the Amazon, specifically the Leticia area, and are graceful, elegant, and just beautiful. Healthy, wild specimens like these are far more unusual than they've used to be, and you'll display a stately, calm demeanor.
Angelfish come from a variety of habitats, and are found inhabiting water with a wide pH range (anywhere from "sub 5 to 7.2 in some areas). They tend to tend to aggregate quietly among overhanging branches and roots in areas of diffuse light, shadows, and vertically-oriented nooks and crannies- and this needs to be taken into account when designing their aquarium. At the very least, they should have significant cover (plants, wood, etc.) to retreat to when disturbed.
There is always controversy when it comes to recommended tank sizes for these graceful fish, and we'd rather err on the side of recommending the largest aquarium possible for long-term mainentance of this species. An aquarium with minimum dimensions of 48" long and 20" in height is required to accommodate them for their full life span. Being "vertical" fishes, they can grow to as much as 8 inches high, with a body length approaching 6 inches or more.
Regardless of the water chemistry composition you prefer to utilize, the most important factor, in our opinion, is stability and high water quality. Of course, utilizing some leaves or other botanicals in the water may be of benefit, supplying both beneficial tannins and humic substances, which are though to provide some possible immunity and disease resistance to the fish.
Our specimens are very carefully collected, handled, and acclimated to captivity, and are eating and in very good health before they get to you. These are fishes which have been well-handled all along the short chain of supply from collector to you, and Mike Tuccinardi's facility is well-prepared to handle these delicate fishes upon arrival into the United States. Nonetheless, we highly recommend that you take the time to quarantine and evaluate all of your specimens before adding them to your display aquarium.
These are "medium-sized" specimens, approximately 3"-4" in length and a corresponding larger depth. We recommend feeding them with a variety of high quality frozen and live foods. These are wonderful fish to keep if you have an aquarium that can accommodate them properly.
